The “New Look” Bingara website went live last week after a substantial revamp. The site is fast approaching its third anniversary and that’s pretty old in web years. Since its launch in 2007 the site has grown enormously, there are now in excess of 200 pages and hits recorded are massive. Local business and community organisations have widely utilised the site by advertising their product, event or business. The Gwydir Shire Council has kept charges to a minimum so that all residents can have easy, affordable access. In most instances access is free. |

Sara Marle, on behalf of the Warialda Historical Society, has received $2,800 in funding from the Royal Australian Historical Society to make a film about the history of Warialda during the 1930s to 1960s, with an emphasis on World War 2. It is envisioned that the project will work closely with the Warialda RSL and will include interviews of local people, documentation of historical items owned by the RSL and a small section about the town today. Many rural residents have taken advantage of Council’s Self Help Program allowing works to be undertaken that would not normally be done. Residents provide some form of resource to the projects whether it is a grader, haulage trucks, roller and/or a gravel source. Council has a great appreciation for the assistance residents provide through time and resources to accomplish these projects and look forward to continuing such a worthwhile partnership.

Gwydir Shire Council Continues as a Learning Organisation
The Gwydir Learning Region (GLR) changed its structure during 2008/2009 and set its sights on raising its profile and its influence nationally. The Council is now represented on the Board of the Australian Learning Communities Network Inc.
The GLR has developed a very close relationship with the Department of Education and Training and continues to meet regularly with representatives of the Department and the Teachers Federation. Gwydir Learning Region Website was developed with a blog allowing for interaction with and between participants.
Gwydir Shire Council supports the concept of the GLR by example. During the 2008/2009 period Council signed up its 100th trainee. Council’s Mr Rod Smith was guest speaker at the NSW Learning Communities Forum in August 2009. Mr Smith presented the concept and important role of the GLR.

Gwydir Snap Shot 2008/2009 is now available to download. Gwydir Shire Council has come a long way in its first term. The workforce has moulded into a cohesive and efficient organisation. The dedication and loyalty that has been shown by all of the staff in making this happen has been quite extraordinary. The Council’s major roles are in the areas of policy, planning, budget allocation, level and extent of works and services to be provided. Gwydir Shire Council also works co-operatively with its community to provide a range of community building initiatives that sets us apart from our neighbouring Councils.
The Gwydir Snapshot is a summary of achievements for the Gwydir Shire councilors and staff over the past two years. Click here to download a pdf of the Gwydir Snapshot
